Let the Kids be

Parents stop pushing your kids into a pit.

A company has been using advertising to push young kids into a pit called coding. I say this because, as a future parent, I don’t feel the need for a 6-year-old kid to learn to code. Nor is it necessary for a 9-year-old or even a 12-year-old.

A kids hand on a desk splayed with sketch pens, paint, paper, rocks and crayon
What if we let the kid decide whether he wants to cut open hearts or touch hearts?

When I was 11, the only careers I knew about were doctors, engineers, teachers, and lawyers. I never knew there is a world beyond these. But now, kids have an option. They can be singers, dancers, actors, writers, authors, marketers, and God knows what all. They have an array of opportunities. And yet, parents are pushing them towards the rat race.

I know we need excellent doctors, teachers, and engineers. I know we can’t leave these careers because they are essential to our survival. But what if we let the kid decide whether he wants to cut open hearts or touch hearts?

Food for thought- why don’t we let the kids decide whether they want to write music or type codes?

Why do we have to push a kid to take up karate, tennis, skating, remedial math, and Spanish lessons? Why not let them become good human beings or teach them how to respect women?

Why not talk to them about sex education and inform them that true religion is humanity and love? Why not teach them and show them it’s not about competition anymore, but about collaboration?

As a future parent, I promise to let my kids grow into the best version of themselves. I would hand them a book and open their mind to the beauty of the world instead of giving them a cellphone and another screen to have them shut their eyes in pain.
